Although not quite in the same league as the well established shopping areas of Dallas or Houston, Austin has many excellent shopping districts and there is a large selection of goods. The main shopping-rich quarters of town include downtown Austin, the Drag and the West End, while the majority of the major shopping malls in Austin can be found at the city limits.

Local stores in Austin generally open during office hours from about 09:00 to 17:30 or 18:00 and some venues are open on Sunday from 12:00. Shopping centres and malls open about the same time and stay open until 21:00. Sunday hours also apply for many shopping malls in Austin.

Austin is mainly known for its shopping districts of old and new specialty shops and well-known chains, while upscale shopping centres are springing up all the time and are usually located on the outskirts of the city.

Austin's Antique Marketplace is essentially a flea market comprised of scores of vendors in a 20,000-square-foot area. Shoppers here can expect to find plenty of vintage collectibles, second hand items and imitation jewelry.

The Austin Antique Mall is a huge shopping mall / flea market with more than one hundred outlets, selling everything from clothing and second hand furniture to sought after antique items and other paraphernalia.

Kerbey Lane / Jefferson Square

Focused on Kerbey Lane and Jefferson Square, this massive shopping district stretches along 38th Street and includes numerous specialty shops with virtually everything available from the latest fashions and ethnic foods to linen and coffee. You will find shops of every description from as far west as Mopac all the way to Austin's Central Market, east of Jefferson Square.

South Congress

Located to the south of downtown Austin, South Congress is somewhat of a bohemian shopping area set on a wide boulevard where you will find many stores featuring new-age items and collectibles including clothes made from natural fibers, as well as herbs and folk art. Interesting furniture can also be found here and this area of Austin features some popular and rustic eateries.

The Drag

The Drag retains its original ambience, with its ever-present range of specialist shops selling souvenirs and rare books, while also playing host to the likes of Starbucks and Barnes and Noble and other new additions since the rejuvenation of the district.

Gateway Shopping Center

Located just out of town and often compared with the glitzy malls in Houston and Dallas, Austin's Gateway Shopping Center is full of brand name stores, such as Nordstrom Rack and Old Navy. The complex features a 16 screen cinema and a variety of food outlets.

West End
