Pierre Shopping and Districts
(Pierre, South Dakota - SD, USA)
When it comes to state capitals, Pierre really is a tiny city and as such, there is little scope for a big shopping trip here or any major retail therapy. However, that said, there are enough shops to keep most locals and visitors happy, particularly if you are prepared to head outside of the city center, to the Pierre Mall.
Downtown Pierre is where the majority of the capital's independent and most conveniently located shops reside, along streets such as the East Dakota Avenue and parallel West Sioux Avenue.
Most of these stores come in the form of small speciality shops, which are often interspersed with eateries, such as the Pier 347 cafe. This means that you can easily take a break, put your shopping bags down and enjoy a tasty bagel, accompanied with a latte or a warming hot chocolate. Alternatively, head along South Central Avenue to the State Theater 1-2-3 cinema complex on West Capitol Avenue and catch a movie.
Where to Shop
A branch of the Walgreens pharmacy stands on East Sioux Avenue, being just down the road from Capital City Florists, First National Bank and Burger King. Also within walking distance is Lynn's Dakotamart, which is fronted by a parking lot and provides a handy place for grocery shopping, especially if you are self-catering during your trip.
Located on the northeastern side of the state capital, on North Harrison Avenue, the Pierre Mall is another notable shopping destination. Its collection of shops includes sizeable department stores, such as Dollar Plus, JC Penney and Kmart, as well as smaller shops selling clothing, electrical goods, fashion accessories, jewelry and shoes.
Those coming to the Pierre Mall for clothing can choose between stores such as Christopher and Banks, Glik's, Maurices and Rancher's Outlet. The shopping hours here are long, with shops opening between the hours of 10:00 and 21:00 during the week, meaning that you can shop in the evening if necessary. Saturday's hours are slightly shorter, running from 10:00 to 18:00, while on Sundays, stores usually open at midday and close at around 17:00.
