The climate of West Yellowstone is very distinctive, with typically hot summer weather and harsh overnight frosts during the Montana winters. However, even on a sunny summer's day in West Yellowstone, when daytime temperatures can rise higher than 30°C / 86°F, nighttime temperatures generally drop sharply, feeling very chilly if you are out and about at this time of the day.

Visitors staying in West Yellowstone will soon realize that the town's climate is also somewhat unpredictable, with the possibility of infrequent thunderstorms and strong windy weather. In general, precipitation levels remain fairly low and most months average around 2.5 cm / 1 inch or less. April, May and June tend to be the wettest months, when rainfalls of between 3.8 cm / 1.5 inches or slightly more is to be expected.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The winter climate of West Yellowstone is predictably cold and experience plenty of snowfall, with many tourists arriving to take full advantage of the skiing and snowmobiling which becomes possible around the Yellowstone National Park. Spring weather takes a while to arrive and some years, snow can linger around until May, although daytime temperatures soon begin to rise.

With plentiful sunshine and a very warm / hot climate, summer is understandably the time of the year when tourism levels around West Yellowstone peak. However, whilst June usually sees temperatures of around 26°C / 79°F, past records have recorded snowy weather as late as June, although this is considered to be unusual and not the norm.
