Wichita Neighborhoods, Locations and Districts

(Wichita, Kansas - KS, USA)

Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and contains the greatest percentage of people in the state. The city of Wichita lies on the banks of the Arkansas River and is a historic urban center, which was settled in the mid-19th century.

Most of the city is established on a grid pattern, apart from the elegant Eastborough community, to the east of downtown Wichita, and the streets are easy to navigate. Wichita has several distinctive districts, where art, history and entertainment are in abundance.

College Hill District

College Hill is a pleasant area and one of Wichita's earliest neighborhoods, with a mish-mash of architectural styles and lots of commercial activity. A typical tour of this Wichita district will reveal Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Prairie, Dutch Colonial, Italian Renaissance, Classical and neo-Classical themes in the residential areas, while the commercial districts consist of early to mid-20th century buildings.

Downtown District

The downtown area of Wichita (Central and Main) has two of Kansas's largest shopping malls, numerous specialty shops and a selection of antiques stores. Downtown Wichita is also home to an abundance of international restaurants including Chinese, French and Mexican cuisines. Of special interest in the downtown area is the open-air gallery on Douglas Avenue, in the heart of downtown.

Eastborough District

Located to the east of downtown Wichita is the community of Eastborough, situated in an elegant area of the city. Eastborough does not stick to the organized grid pattern. Its streets and avenues are curved and charming, and the community also comes with parks and several lakes. Wichita's Eastborough district is located near to Towne East Square and there are some quality attractions here, including McHenry's Home and Garden, lots of specialty shops, fine dining and lively entertainment options.

Old Town District

Old Town is a charming historic warehouse district of Wichita with early 20th-century buildings and brick streets. The area is loaded with businesses that encompass a compact city block bursting with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
