If you are staying in Topeka and have time to plan a day or afternoon of shopping, then you will certainly find plenty of choice in this state capital. There are clusters of shops lining the majority of the main thoroughfares, along with department stores, supermarkets and several sizeable mall complexes.

For a chance to both shop for fresh produce and interact with the locals, consider shopping at the Downtown Topeka Farmers' Market, which is to be found on the corner of Southwest 12th Street and SW Harrison Street. This market is open here on Saturdays (07:30 to midday) between the months of April and November.

Located on the southern side of Topeka, the Walmart Supercenter on Southwest 37th Street is to be found just down the road from the Major Palm Park and is a good place for some serious grocery shopping, suiting self-caterers. Further supermarkets in this state capital include Aldi on Southwest Arvonia Place, and Dillons on Northwest 25th Street. There is also a Kmart discount store on Southwest Wanamaker Road, which may be of particular interest due to its location opposite the West Ridge Mall.


Where to Shop

The West Ridge Mall lies on the western side of Topeka, being situated just off Southwest 17th Street and Interstate I-470 (exit 2).

This huge indoor shopping center opened in the latter years of the 1980s and boasts more than 100 stores, eateries and services. These include the prominent anchor stores of the Burlington Coat Factory, Dillard's and JC Penny, as well as Sears and smaller stores such as Claire's, Gap for Kids, Gymboree, Riddle's Jewelry, the Sunglass Hut, TJ Maxx and Toys 'R' Us.

Of note to potential shoppers in Topeka, the West Ridge Mall is open seven days a week, between the hours of 10:00 and 21:00 from Monday to Saturday, and again on Sundays, from 12:00 until 18:00.

Other significant malls located within Topeka include the Gage Shopping Center on Southwest Gage Center Drive, and the Fairlawn Plaza Mall on Southwest Chelsea Drive. There are in the region of 50 different stores based at the Fairlawn Plaza, including Dickerson's, Dillons, Hallmark Cards, Kitchen Gallery, OfficeMax, Petland and Walgreens, together with a branch of Bank of America.
