The capital of Kansas may not be the largest city in the state, but Topeka does come with a decent choice of accommodation, ranging from familiar branded hotels and chain motels, to smaller guest houses and B&Bs.

Hotels in the state capital tend to be grouped around the city center and on the westerly outskirts, with much lodging situated close to prominent junctions on interstates I-70 and I-470. On the northern outskirts of Topeka, the Holiday Inn Express Hotel on Highway US-24 is particularly popular and comes with some excellent reviews from past guests.

Roughly 30 minutes to the east, the neighboring city of Lawrence offers a further selection of competitively priced accommodation, being reached via Interstate I-70 (the Kansas Turnpike).

Where to Stay

If you are looking for chain accommodation in downtown Topeka, nearby restaurants and attractions, then several hotels stand out.

Close to Chesney Park, the Capitol Plaza Hotel on Southwest Topeka Boulevard (US-75) stands next to the Kansas Expocenter and just off the Expocenter Drive. Nearby, the scenic Shunga Trail runs alongside the Shunganunga Creek and is the perfect place for an afternoon stroll in pleasant surroundings.

Based next to the Old Town area of Topeka, accommodation includes the Ramada Convention Center and Hotel on Southeast 6th Avenue, located just off Interstate I-70 (exit 362B), where it comes with both indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Close to the West Ridge Mall, on the other side of the city, exit 1B on Interstate I-470 is where you will find plenty of budget lodging. The Fairfield Inn and Residence Inn are located on Southwest Westport Drive, while the AmericInn and Days Inn hotels reside on Southwest Wanamaker Road.

For more intimate and more central accommodation in Topeka, the Woodward Inns (several neighboring guest houses and a Gothic-style mansion) on 13 Street and Fillmore Street come with highly recommended lodging, packed with character and homely features. These include honeymoon suites, hearty breakfasts, massage therapy, romantic packages and fine dining with tasty homemade soup and bread.
