San Jose Churches and Cathedrals

(San Jose, California - CA, USA)

California's Bay area is home to sizable Christian communities, with local churches in San Jose following various faiths. These include Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons, while further religions are also well supported and include Buddhists, Hindus and Jews, amongst others.

Situated in the very heart of the city and just across from the San Jose Museum of Art, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph stands on South Market Street and serves as the principal church for the city's Roman Catholic Diocese. The cathedral has led an interesting history, being rebuilt no less than four times, following severe earthquake damage in 1818, 1822 and 1868, and a fire in 1875. The current structure was consecrated in 1877, although it was not until 1884 that the portico was finally completed.
