The ski resorts open their doors to hordes of keen skiers and snowboarders, who come here from enjoy the endless powdery slopes, where snowmobile trekking and even dog sledding has also become popular. The snowy weather generally arrives at Lake Tahoe in the middle of November, with the ski resorts tending to switch on their lifts soon after, remaining open until the snow begins to melt towards the end of April.

On the north / northwest shore of Lake Tahoe, the main ski resorts are conveniently close to Tahoe City and include the Alpine Meadows, the Homewood Mountain Resort, the Northstar Tahoe / Truckee Resort and the highly acclaimed Squaw Valley USA. Of note, the Squaw Valley USA currently ranks as one of California's premier ski resorts and is nothing short of a winter paradise, with an Olympic Ice Pavilion boasting views across Lake Tahoe itself.

These include the Sierra at Tahoe Resort at Twin Bridges, the Kirkwood Mountain Resort and the legendary Heavenly Mountain Resort, which lies next to South Lake Tahoe, on the corner of Saddle Road and Wildwood Road, close to the state line and regularly hosting many World Cup ski races.

On the northeasterly Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, top skiing resorts include both the Diamond Peak and the Incline Village, and also Mount Rose, which is located next to Reno and is one of the highest ski resorts in the Tahoe Basin. Those heading in an easterly directly from the San Francisco Bay area will encounter a number of resorts around Highway US-80 and the Donner Pass, such as the Boreal Mountain Resort in Soda Springs. Skiers and snowboarders alike will find the following resorts of particular interest.
