Hotels in the Lake Tahoe area can hike their lodging rates by as much as 30 percent during the peak summer and winter seasons, when demand also rockets and availability is reduced.

If you are hunting for bargain accommodation, then the best place to start your vacation is at one of the very inexpensive budget hotels in South Lake Tahoe, where chains can be found along highways such as the US-50, to the west of the US-89. Midweek deals always tend to offer the best value and so are well worth considering if you are planning a vacation on the cheap.

Where to Stay

Do bear in mind that California does not currently permit gambling, while Nevada does. Therefore, since the city of South Lake Tahoe lies on the very border between California and Nevada, a number of casino hotels and resorts have sprung up around this area.

These include the Rodeway Inn Casino Center on the Pine Boulevard, and the Quality Inn and Suites Casino on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which is also handy accommodation for those planning to visit a number of the casinos in the town of Stateline, Nevada. The Heavenly Valley Ski Resort and gondola proves a major draw card here in the winter months, always attracting large crowds without fail.

Popular accommodation on the actual Lake Boulevard includes the Best Value Inn, the Pepper Tree Inn, the Sunnyside Resort, and the very highly recommended Tahoe City Inn, which is less than a block away from the glistening waterfront.

If camping is more your preferred alternative to hotels and other lodging, then a number of good camping sites are to be found all around Lake Tahoe, in the various state parks, and at the USFS sites. The camping site at the Sugar Pine Point State Park on the westerly shore remains open throughout the year and is hard to better.
