Big Sur Property Market and Real Estate Guide

(Big Sur, Monterey County, California - CA, USA)

The tourist draw of this area is huge and much of the terrain offers coastal views, making property prices here very high-end.

The coastal mountain known as Cone Peak is popular with avid climbers and the landscapes around the region give it great magnetism. There are two main bodies of water in Big Sur, the San Carpoforo Creek and the Carmel River.
San Francisco is just under 150 miles / 241 km north, while Los Angeles is a little over 300 miles / 483 km southeast. The jagged topography makes it impossible to make generalizations about the weather here, as it is varied and complex from hot summers to wet winters. There is an abundance of flora and fauna in the region, with a range of state parks to explore.

Renting Serviced Apartments

Most of the rentals in Big Sur are aimed at tourists as opposed to long-term renters, and as such prices are high. Coastal views are second to none, and staff from maids through to chefs can often be hired for the duration of a stay.

The Big Sur River Valley area is home to the majority of rentals and the summer months are quickly booked up. Expect a daily maid service and security as basic offerings, with many apartments having garden space and access to swimming pools.

Buying Apartments and Houses

The property market in Big Sur is limited as there are only a few properties here. The area has only 300 hotel rooms, three gas stations and no supermarkets or fast food chains, and so as one would expect, when property comes up for sale is gets snapped up fairly quickly. Non- US nationals can buy property in the US, but criminal records may cause problems, as will a bad credit history.

Real Estate Agents

Many of the area's estate agents are located in the larger towns nearby and they all speak English, with a select few also offering Spanish-speakers. The Internet is the best way to find an agency and, due to its small size, many locals in Big Sur will offer recommendations for reliable agencies.
