Big Sur Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Big Sur, Monterey County, California - CA, USA)

The landscape around Big Sur is extremely varied, ranging from mountainous terrain to a sweeping oceanfront, and this results in a series of different micro climates. However, typical of California, sunny weather is a big part of the appeal of Big Sur and from May to October, daytime temperatures stay around 30°C / 86°F, climbing higher during the summer months of June, July ad August.

The summer climate of Big Sur tends to be on the dry side and around the coastline, temperatures are moderated and fluctuate much less than when inland. Winter weather is mild, although it can be a little wet at times, although rainfall is rarely what could be considered as excessive.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Summer is always a wonderful time to enjoy a holiday in this part of California, with a good choice of easily accessible beaches and plenty of recreational attractions on offer. However, while the summer climate of Big Sur is hot, around the coastline, fog can often make an appearance in the morning, caused by high pressure from the north Pacific and generally burning off as the day progresses.

In winter, the days remain fairly mild, although by night, it feels considerably colder and occasional foggy weather is not uncommon. Whilst snowfall in Big Sur is extremely rare, the neighboring Santa Lucia Mountains are often capped in snow, which when melting, has been known to cause rock falls and mudslides across Highway 1.
