Big Sur Hotels and Accommodation

(Big Sur, Monterey County, California - CA, USA)

Coastal viewMuch of the accommodation in Big Sur quickly fills up during the summer months, with hotels soon becoming fully booked at the weekends. The lack of available lodging is partly due to a number of different land-use restrictions within Big Sur, which have been set up in a successful attempt to simply conserve the area's natural beauty, and preventing modern hotels from spoiling the landscape.

In total, there are no more than 300 individual guest rooms on offer at hotels stretching the entire length of the Highway 1, which runs between Carmel-by-the-Sea and also San Simeon. This therefore reiterates the need to book accommodation in Big Sur before you get here.

Where to Stay

If your budget is low, then the accommodation options available to you become quite limited, particularly during the summer season, when hotels are at their most expensive. Camping is generally the cheapest way to stay in the area and the riverfront Big Sur Campground is amongst the best camping sites on offer.

Located on the town's northerly outskirts, on Highway 1, the Big Sur Campground enjoys a peaceful setting beneath some huge redwood trees and even features a number of rustic log cabins. It is also possible to camp at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and the Andrew Molera State Park.

Further picture of the coastlineClose to the Henry Miller Library and the Castro Canyon, the Deetjens Big Sur Inn is a good, reliable hotel on Highway 1, while close by, the Lucia Lodge features cabins with excellent coastal views.

Near to the northerly Ripplewood Resort, the Glen Oaks Motel is also of note, along with the Big Sur River Inn, which boasts a decked area overlooking the Pheneger Creek.
