Located off Highway 1 and within easy reach of the very heart of Big Sur, these museums showcase local history, spiritual research and the life of acclaimed local author Henry Miller.

The Esalen Institute has become an important cultural attraction and offers a series of different public workshops, research initiatives and related events. Established way back in the late seventies, the Big Sur Historical Society celebrates the rich and cultural heritage of both the town and the coastline, at its very own Molera Ranch House Museum, which is close to many scenic hiking trails and a popular stretch of beach.

This popular center is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating visitors on the merits of spiritual studies, martial arts, massage, yoga and various aspects of dance. The Esalen Institute covers just over 25 acres / 10 hectares and is located alongside the Big Sur shoreline, alongside the Pacific Ocean and also the breathtaking Santa Lucia Mountains. If you have time, you can stop off here for a health lunch, and then enjoy spa treatment, or enjoy a relaxing hour in one of the hot tubs, which are filled with only natural spring water originating nearby.

Situated along Highway 1 and close to the Esalen Institute, the Henry Miller Library celebrates the extensive works of acclaimed author Henry Miller (1891 to 1980), who lived in Big Sur for almost 20 years, between 1944 and 1962. Visitors will be able to enjoy a treasure-trove of valuable and rare books, along with areas devoted to the region's past, literature and even cartoon art. Various events are regularly staged at the Henry Miller Library, including the opportunities to enjoy concerts, writing workshops, and a notable 'Open Mic' session where you sing or simply speak your mind. An onsite gift shop is available, as well as access to the Internet and quiet areas where you can simply read one of the many books within the library area.

Molera Ranch House Museum / Big Sur Historical Society (BSHS)

There are now more than 100 members within the Big Sur Historical Society (BSHS), who are responsible for maintaining the excellent Molera Ranch House Museum, which is located at the Andrew Molera State Park and within the historical Ranch House. Exhibits include a number of artifacts relating to local artists, the earliest pioneers and the lifestyle of indigenous settlers. There is also a museum shop filled with books and gifts to the history of Big Sur area.
