Juneau Whale Watching
(Juneau, Alaska - AK, USA)
The waters around Southeast Alaska and Juneau become an important feeding ground for humpback whales during the summer months, with these giant mammals choosing to migrate here in search of krill and tiny fish.
Swimming from as far away as
Hawaii in just a month (over 3,000 miles / 4,830 km), these whales often feed in groups and can reach lengths of 15 meters / 50 feet or more, with females tending to be slightly larger and longer than males. More than 500 humpbacks regularly migrate to Alaska each summer, with a handful choosing to live here all through the year.
Whale watching tours from Juneau are incredibly popular, with tourists hoping to witness a breach or take a photo of an enormous tail vanishing beneath the water. Sizeable pods of orcas (killer whales) can also be seen swimming close to Juneau, in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
If you want to guarantee yourself a whale sighting, then come to Juneau between May and September and witness these gentle giants at play. Cruise boats depart from Auke Bay Harbor and head along Alaska's Inside Passage, where they also offer the chance to see other water mammals, eagles, seabirds and great coastal views.
