Alaska's capital city and also a unified municipality, the city of Juneau sits alongside the Gastineau Channel, on the famous Alaskan panhandle in geographical terms. Interestingly, by overall area size, this is actually the second-biggest of all the cities in North America, although conversely, in terms of its population of some 35,000 people, it is actually one of the smallest.

Getting in and out of Juneau by road is not possible, and therefore visitors have to choose between plane or boat. Cruise ships are an especially common sight in the summer and their many thousands of passengers soon fill up the city by day, before these giants sail away at night, on to their next vacation destination.
