Juneau Hotels and Accommodation

(Juneau, Alaska - AK, USA)

The Alaskan state capital of Juneau is a fairly small and compact city, with a very reasonable collection of hotels to meet the needs of its seasonal visitors. Accommodation here tends to be concentrated around two areas, the downtown district and close to Juneau International Airport, roughly 15 minutes to the northwest.

If you are planning your vacation to the city on a tight budget and looking for cheap accommodation, then you may well be tempted by the centrally located Juneau International Hostel, which sits on Harris Street and is widely regarded as one of Alaska's finest youth hostels.

This hostel features cheap lodging rates and a private family room, being just a five-minute stroll from the State Capitol Building and roughly a block away from the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. However, do be aware that there are curfews in place and a maximum stay of no more than five nights.

Where to Stay

Hotels in this part of Juneau include the Westmark Baranof on North Franklin Street, the Alaskan Hotel on South Franklin Street, and the Silverbow Inn Bed and Breakfast on 2nd Street, all of which come highly recommended.

If you would prefer to stay close to Juneau's airport, then consider the accommodation available at the nearby chain hotels and motels, the most popular of which include brands such as the Super 8 on Trout Street and the Extended Stay on Shell Simmons Drive.

Close by and also worth considering are the Frontier Suites and Best Western Country Lane, with both of these hotels residing on the Glacier Highway and offering competitive lodging rates. Those who prefer camping to hotels may like to try either the outlying camping sites at the Auke Bay Recreation Area, or next to Mendenhall Lake (close to the Mendenhall Glacier).

If the mainstream accommodation in Juneau doesn't appeal, then head across the Gastineau Channel (via the Juneau Douglas Bridge), where the unusual Beachside Villa awaits your patronage. Standing on the Douglas Highway, this popular waterfront hotel / inn makes for a decent base for traveling around and is conveniently close to Harris Harbor. However, it is the superb balcony views and forested hillside backdrop that make this a truly special place to search out. And if you are extremely lucky, you might even spot a whale swimming in the harbor.
