Juneau Art Galleries

(Juneau, Alaska - AK, USA)

The various galleries and exhibition spaces located within Juneau often tend to be rather community based, showcasing the works of Alaskan artists and artisans alike. At the Alaska State Museum, the collection of fine art is a good place to begin, with some 2,000 paintings, sculptures and photographs, including rare watercolors and historic engravings, documenting the early Alaskan explorations.

Standing close to the waterfront and the Coast Guard Station, the Juneau Arts and Culture Center is operated by the city's Arts and Humanities Council.

The building itself is of particular significance, since it began life in the late 1950s as the National Guard Armory, which closed in 2004 and remained empty for a number of years after this time. Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers, the Arts and Culture Center has occupied this former armory since 2007 and serves as an important space for various public events.

Managed as a cooperative organization and run by a group of local artists from this part of Alaska, the downtown Juneau Artists Gallery is a popular spot to come to pick up regional art works at their best, and at affordable prices. Visitors will also get the opportunity to talk to the artists and even watch them at work.
