Visitors to Juneau will find that the climate is described as being humid, continental and oceanic. Being located in Alaska, the capital can experience extremes of weather, with subarctic temperatures at times.

Juneau is actually not only the wettest city in Alaska, but also the warmest. Temperatures during the winter season feel fairly chilly, staying close to freezing by day and becoming icy by night, with noticeably short daylight hours due to the city's northerly setting.

When the December weather arrives, you can expect the sun to rise at just before 09:00 and then set in the afternoon, as early as 15:00 or thereabouts, meaning just over six hours of daylight at this time of the year. If you are lucky enough, the Northern Lights may appear during the dark nights, as they can sometimes be seen this far south.

Snow is fairly commonplace during Juneau's winter climate, with snowfalls tending to settle on a fairly regular basis, due to the frosty weather. December, January and February reliably see the most snow, with monthly averages in the region of 20 inches / 51 cm.

The springtime climate tends to arrive fairly slowly in Juneau, with temperatures finally reaching double figures in May. From June to August, daytime temperatures begin to peak at around 18°C / 64°F or 20°C / 68°F, and daylight hours quickly increase. In fact, at the time of the summer solstice, the sun rises at around 04:00 and does not set until as late as 22:00, meaning over 18 hours of daylight.
