Photo of shopping wharf in the citySouvenir shopping is always popular with tourists visiting Cozumel and most of the island's shops are happy to accept payment by various means, including Mexican pesos, US dollars, credit cards and traveller's cheques. Many of the main shopping areas on Cozumel become particularly crowded at midday and close shortly after for the afternoon, reopening later to capture the passing evening trade.

When to Shop and Opening Hours

Shops tend to start trading as early as 09:00, closing at 13:00 and then reopening between the hours of 17:00 to 21:00, Monday to Saturday. Within the most popular shopping districts, an increasing number of shops choose to stay open throughout the day, especially during the high season. Most shops on Cozumel remain closed on Sunday mornings and only open in the afternoon.

Where to Shop

The island's only town of San Miguel de Cozumel is the best place for shopping. Within San Miguel, the main shopping strip is the Avenida Rafael Melgar. This appealing waterfront boulevard boasts a large collection of shops, which also line many of the side streets. Jewellers specialising in silverware are particularly popular along the Avenida Rafael Melgar, together with local shops selling traditional Mexican folk art, handicrafts and serapes (colourful shawls / blankets).

Further shops in San Miguel de Cozumel can be found around the Plaza del Sol and also close to the many piers, where a number of commercial shopping malls target the cruise ship passengers and stay open all day. These shopping malls also feature cafes and restaurants, should you require a break and a place to rest your bags, together with some duty-free stores. The Punta Langosta Shopping Centre is one of the best malls on Cozumel and located close to the Punta Langosta Pier.
