Visitors to this town will soon realise that it has an impressive and unusual art scene and some on the local artists even own galleries, where their pieces are well exhibited.

The glassworks at the Galeria Azul are extremely eye-catching and often features a bold and colourful marine theme, with images of turtles, rays, dolphins, coral reefs, exotic fish and other animals from around Cozumel. For something quite different, the intricate feather paintings at the Balam Mayan Feather Gallery always make for a particularly unique souvenir and something that is sure to remind you of your time in Cozumel and become quite a talking piece.

The Galeria Azul is located within the town of San Miguel de Cozumel and is owned by a local artist Greg Dietrich, who specialises in selling hand-blown glassworks of various descriptions, including colourful lamp bases, vases, night lights and mounted glass engravings of Mayan scenery. Many of the glass pieces available here have a strong connection to the island itself.

San Miguel's Balam Mayan Feather Gallery is always popular with tourists, who find these unusual art works to be the perfect Mexican holiday souvenir. Situated on the northern side of the town plaza, this unusual shop specialises in the traditional art of actually painting directly onto local bird feathers and the end results can be both large and small, but always extremely detailed and impressive, often depicting flowers, fish, people and even the country's flag. The feather paintings are always well presented in attractive, complimentary picture frames. Prices vary enormously, but many of the smaller pieces are quite affordable.
