Cayo Guillermo Events, Things to Do and Festivals 2014 / 2015

(Cayo Guillermo, Ciego de Avila, Jardines del Rey, Cuba)

Due to the size and nature of Cayo Guillermo, there aren't any special festivals held on the island. Even the major Cuban holidays like Independence Day are only mildly celebrated here, since there are no towns. One time of year, however, when you can expect a good turnout is New Year's Eve. All of the major resorts on Cayo Guillermo put on a good show, featuring live Cuban music events, dancing, and of course plenty of drinking.

If you're visiting Cuba during one of its unique 'revolutionary' holidays, it's certainly worth checking out Cuba for the pageantry alone. To do this, simply drive across the bridge connecting the cay to the mainland and head to either Morón or Ciego de Avila. Both of these places are decent-sized cities that will hold the requisite government holidays like January's Triumph of the Revolution, Independence Day on October 10th, or the three-day extravaganza known as the Commemoration of the Assault of the Moncada Garrison in July.

Cayo Guillermo Calendar of Festivals and Events 2014 / 2015: General Information

Since every day feels like a festival on Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco, you can supplement this by catching a Cuban cultural performance at one of the major resorts on the island. The Sol Meliá Hotel has an open-air theatre that holds decent music and dance shows every evening, while Meliá Cayo Coco's impressive Club Cubano next door offers Cuban dance lessons, seminars and other interesting cultural events.

The Wednesday night cabaret show at La Cueva de Jabali is another option, if you need something to do after dark. While not as impressive as similar shows in Havana, its location inside a small underground grotto makes it a rather unique experience.
