There are plenty of places to purchase souvenirs and gifts in Manaus, with markets and large modern shopping malls each offering something quite different. Local markets in Manaus tend to have rather more character and are a good place to find some quality Brazilian handicrafts, with stall holders expecting a spot of friendly negotiation over the price.

Covered malls in Manaus are the perfect activity for a rainy day and a taste of home. The Amazonas Shopping Mall / Amazon Shopping Centre) on the Avenida Djalma Batista is conveniently close to the Infocentro Informatica tourist outlet and is located next to the Rua Joao Alfredo. One of the biggest and most impressive malls in the whole of North Brazil, the recently expanded Amazonas comes with some 300 stores, kiosks and eateries, together with a multi-screen cinema complex and lots of parking spaces.


Where to Shop

Other popular shopping centres in Manaus include the Studio 5 Festival Mall close to the Industrial district, the Tvlandia Mall on the Avenida Djalma Batista, and the Millennium Centre on the Avenida Constantino Nery. For a spot of supermarket shopping, the Carrefour store on the Avenida Eduardo Ribeiro enjoys a central downtown location and is open Monday to Saturday, from 07:30 to 21:00, and again on Sundays, between the hours of 07:30 to 14:00.

If you prefer the atmosphere of market shopping, then there are several good markets to choose between in Manaus. Situated on the Rua dos Bares and close to the Porto Manaus Moderno, the cast-iron Mercado Municipal Adolfo Lisboa is brimming with stalls selling everything from T-shirts and jewellery, to stuffed piranhas and hot snacks. This is the city's main market and is open seven days a week, Of interest, the Mercado Municipal Adolfo Lisboa was founded in the early 1880s, being inspired by the Les Halles market of Paris.
