(St. George's, Bermuda)

Waterfront picture showing Hamilton's Front StreetBermuda is a small place that's easily traversed. Day trips are possible by bus or by taxi, or tourists can simply rent a small scooter and explore the surrounding attractions at entirely their own pace.

The most popular day trip destination from St. George's is the city of Hamilton, where historic attractions are replaced by dining and nightlife. St. George's Parish is also home to Tucker's Town, a quiet and upscale resort. Other recommended excursions include Somerset Village, Flatts Village and the beach at Warwick Long Bay.

Hamilton

Address: Pembroke Parish
Oddly enough, the city of Hamilton is in Pembroke Parish rather than in neighbouring Hamilton Parish. Most tourists spend much of their time in Hamilton, but for those staying in St. George's, this is the perfect place for a night out on the town. Few tourists spend their entire holiday in St. George's, but those who do invariably spend an evening or two enjoying some of what Hamilton has to offer. Amongst the main attractions here are the Botanical Gardens, the Blue Hole Park, Fort Hamilton, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Sessions House, the Bermuda Historical Society Museum and the Bermuda National Gallery.

Tucker's Town

Address: St. George's Parish
Tucker's Town is a small community located on the other side of Castle Harbour. Early 17th-century community planning failed, and it wasn't until the 1700s that people really started settling here. About a century and a half later, Tucker's Town was re-envisioned as an upmarket resort community. The tradition continues today as this area has some of the finest mansions on Bermuda, along with a couple of excellent golf courses - Tucker's Point and the Mid Ocean Club.

Somerset Village

Address: Sandy's Parish
This idyllic retreat is on the far opposite side of Bermuda, in Sandy's Parish, on the southerly shoreline of Mangrove Bay. The village is a lovely place for an escape and has some of the most romantic seaside villas and restaurants on the island. Visitors will discover that the beach at Somerset Long Bay is particularly fine. Ferries regularly connect nearby Hamilton and the former Royal Naval Dockyard, where attractions come in the form of shops and restaurants - housed in renovated warehouses, as well as the Dolphin Quest facility and the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

Warwick Long Bay

Address: St. George's Parish
This is one of the best beaches in all of Bermuda, and this alone justifies a day trip. Warwick Long Bay lies between Marley Beach and Horseshoe Bay Cove, where it enjoys relatively secluded surroundings, whilst being close enough to the city of Hamilton to offer easy access to shopping and dining. This is also a premier golfing and horseback-riding region. The South Shore Park is nearby, along with the Fairmont Southampton Golf Club.

Flatts Village

Address: Smith's Parish
Flatts Village makes for an especially charming retreat. In the old days, this village was second only to St. George's, but it now keeps a much lower profile. Dining and nightlife is limited - instead, the emphasis here is on colonial atmosphere, rustic cottages and tranquil evenings. Flatts Bridge crosses over the inlet, while close by is the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ). Each October, the Flatts Festival is a particular highlight here and reliably draws the crowds.
