Bridgetown Museums

Bridgetown is a good place to go for museums and culture on the island Barbados. Tourists frequently come here to check out the Barbados Museum, which is widely known for its definitive collection of historical exhibits and is housed in an atmospheric military prison, formerly used by the British and dating back to the early part of the 19th century.

Home to the island's headquarters for the Barbados National Trust, Wildey House is an extremely attractive Georgian building and is set within spacious grounds covering around five acres / two hectares. Located in the Wildey area, just outside of Bridgetown, Wildey House serves as something of a museum-type attraction, with visitors being able to enjoy guided tours of the main rooms and their impressive period furnishings.

This museum has a comprehensive collection of artefacts relating to the African and American Indian cultures that have developed here. Exhibits also cover the natural history of Barbados and its earliest indigenous people, and include a few collections of European arts and crafts, while there are additional displays concentrating on subject matters such as the colonial days, the emancipation of the island and the abolition of slavery. Also likely to be of interest are the collections of glass works, pottery and antique maps, together with activities laid on especially for children. Of note, there is a useful research library located onsite.

Wildey House

Also known as Tyrol Cot, Wildey House is one of the most impressive heritage buildings in Barbados. Decorated with period furnishings and rare antiques, the house is open to the public for tours. This estate enjoys spacious grounds encompassing just over five acres / two hectares, and is a particularly popular place to host weddings and special functions.
