Swansea Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Swansea, West Glamorgan, South Wales, UK)

Picture of the Mumbles areaSwansea is a coastal city and as such, the climate, weather conditions and precipitation levels are strongly influenced by its waterfront setting. The climate in the Swansea area of West Glamorgan tends to be noticeably milder than other more inland villages and mountainous regions. However, the Atlantic Ocean does tend to bring heavy, rain and some strong winds, which do mean that Swansea experiences some of the region's wettest weather at times.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The winter climate in Swansea is mild and most nights stay above freezing, although occasional snowfalls are not completely unexpected during cold spells. During the sunniest winter weather, the daytime temperatures often exceed 10°C / 50°F and when there is no wind, can feel surprisingly warm at times, particularly in February. However, gusty breezes are commonplace during the winter months in Swansea. By the time March arrives, spring is clearly approaching and the temperatures shoot up and can even rise to 15°C / 59°F on occasion, a clear indication that the weather is improving.

Summers in Swansea tend to be both hot and humid, with June, July and August experiencing the hottest climate, when temperature stay above 20°C / 68°F on most days, rising to 25°C / 77°F or even at times 28°C / 82°F. After long periods of constant sunshine and fine days, a thunderstorm or heavy downpour can be predicted, which seems to clear much of the humidity and often takes place at night-time. When the sunshine reappears, the climate immediately feels 'fresher' and more pleasant.

Autumns in Swansea start towards the middle or end of September, when the temperatures begin to drop slightly during the day, and much more so at night, feeling a little chilly at times. If the summer has been particularly sunny, autumnal colours tend to be superb and many of Swansea's parks and gardens offer spectacular autumnal displays, especially the Clyne Gardens, Victoria Park and also the impressive Botanical Garden at Singleton Park.
