The climate in Derry is typical for this part of the world. Weather systems off the North Atlantic add a layer of unpredictability, so it's hard to know exactly what sort of weather you will encounter while visiting. However, it's practically a given that you will experience plenty of rainfall while here, so be sure to pack accordingly.

Throughout the year, Derry experiences a temperate maritime climate. Average high temperatures exceed 18°C / 64°F during July and August, dropping to around 5°C / 41°F in December and January. Average lows approach, but seldom reach, freezing temperatures in the winter. Evenings are chilly, even during the summer, and intermittent rain showers keep things cool throughout the year.

There is no question that Derry is a damp place, and visitors will do well to pack raincoats and carry an umbrella at all times. In general, the skies are overcast, but the sun peeks out regularly. Bear in mind that any outdoor plans should be backed with an indoor alternative, so that you never find yourself without something to do. Luckily, Derry has plenty of museums and art galleries that are ideal for those intermittently rainy days when the climate is rather inclement.

The rainiest period is from April to September, with peak precipitation in May. Rainy weather continues during the winter, though not nearly as regularly. February tends to be noticeably drier than either December or January. Snow is rare, but can fall when temperatures dip below freezing. However, don't expect to see much accumulation of snow, as sustained freezing temperatures are unlikely even at night. It's a different story in the hinterland, especially at slightly higher elevations.
