Derry Shopping and Districts

(Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK)

Photo of city centre shopsDerry is an important regional hub in Northern Ireland, and it has plenty to offer avid shoppers. In fact, residents of neighbouring communities do almost all of their major shopping right here. As a result, you will have no problem finding anything from sundries to handicrafts.

The majority of shops in Derry open at 09:00 and close sometime between 17:00 and 18:00. Expect most stores to keep later shopping hours on Thursday and Friday nights. Likewise, some shops will open on Sundays during July and August.

When to Shop and Where

Derry delivers on the retail front, with a great selection of shops in the city centre. For ultra-modern retail therapy, head directly to the Richmond Centre, at the intersection of Ferryquay and Shipquay Streets.

The centre has modern department stores, fashionable boutiques and a suite of entertainment options. Immediately outside the walls, the Foyleside Shopping Centre has a similar spread of options.

Derry Craft Village has a similar selection, though there's more of an emphasis on handicrafts. A tower marks this commercial area, and onsite artisans craft souvenirs and gifts. Visit a workshop to get an idea of the creative process, or stop by a tearoom for a chance to rest your feet.

Central viewOne of the most popular types of handicraft you will find for sale in Derry is woollen merchandise. The Donegal Shop specialises in all things wool, including scarves, sweaters and colourful hats.

The oldest Department Store in Ireland is Austin and Company Ltd, which has a presence in Derry at the Diamond, Bishop Street. This particular store dates to the 1830s and specialises in finery including delicate porcelain, designer fashions, jewellery and perfume.
