Derry Hotels and Accommodation

(Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK)

Waterfront view of the cityDerry is a major city in Northern Ireland, with more than 100,000 residents and plenty of accommodation for visitors. In the past, the River Foyle kept traffic en route to the city, but now it's Derry's cultural relevance and recent historical significance that draws visitors. This paves the way for an ample infrastructure, including a good choice of hotels on both sides of the city walls.

Accommodation in Derry ranges from four- and five-star hotels in the city centre to more rustic lodging around the countryside. The latter department includes atmospheric B&Bs, a mainstay of Irish hospitality. There is no question that staying in a B&B is the most enjoyable way to get to know the locals and gain an insight into daily life in this busy Irish city.

Where to Stay

The most convenient selection of B&Bs and guest houses in Derry is located outside the city walls in Bogside, with views of the People's Art Gallery and Free Derry Corner.

In the not-too-distant past, this would not have been a place that visitors would want to be based, but the Derry renaissance has transformed the former slum into a burgeoning arts district where some of the area's most influential residents live.

These hotels are cheaper than those inside the walls, but it's important to note that even the most expensive hotels in Derry are surprisingly affordable, and holiday makers from across the UK still marvel at the low prices attached to local hotels.

In this case, low prices still allow for exceptional quality. The Merchant House on Queen Street serves as a good example. It is housed in a grand restored Georgian home and guests enjoy ample hospitality, comfortable rooms and an Irish breakfast at prices well below those charged across the greater UK. The Saddlers House is also of a high standard and provides bed and breakfast accommodation on Great James Street, in central Derry.
