Killarney Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Killarney, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland)

Summer lake viewAs with the rest of the island, Killarney has a temperate climate. It tends to rain more here than in the rest of the country, however, owing to its south-westerly locale and the effects of Atlantic weather systems on the land mass.

Fortunately, the Atlantic Ocean also keeps the climate of Ireland and the rest of north-west Europe comparatively warm, owing to the heat brought up from the tropics by the Gulf Stream. Although rain gives the land its famous emerald green colour, it can be a pain being stuck in the drizzle for the duration - so it's best to head here in the summer.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

There are four distinct seasons - spring, summer, autumn, winter - with summer being the natural choice for the best weather. The summer climate in Killarney falls between mid-June and early September, although this is also the time when hordes of visitors turn up. To avoid crowds, yet retain warmth and have cheaper hotel rooms, try May, June or September.

Winter really isn't the time to visit Killarney, as days are either cold, damp and foggy, or clear and freezing. In addition, many hotels and B&Bs shut up shop at this time of year and attractions generally close early or shut altogether.
