Killarney Shopping and Districts

(Killarney, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland)

Photo of festival crowds in the town centreAlthough a small town, Killarney has all the usual brand name stores and supermarkets. It also excels in small curiosity-type shops, but is particularly averse to art galleries and traditional craft outlets.

The place is also loaded with gift shops, where you can pick up items from the Kerry region, while some of the larger museums and attractions have their own gift shops. Central Killarney has the pick of the touristy shopping by far in its high streets criss-crossed by small lanes.

When to Shop and Where

As with the eating, Main Street and Plunkett Street have the best, most convenient shopping in Killarney. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities down Muckross Road and Lewis Road, both main streets, although if you're into wandering around quiet lanes and discovering something out of the ordinary, stick with those around the town centre.

Barry's Lane is particularly intriguing. It peels off High Street and comes back out on Chapel Place near the cathedral. There is a delightful art gallery here and you can walk there in a couple of minutes.

Killarney also has larger stores and supermarkets, and the Killarney Outlet Centre has a range of known shops. NIKE and Boots are both here, as is Blarney Woollen Mills. Slightly out of town is Muckross House, a popular local attraction with a gift shop stocking quality woollen items.

Shopping hours in Killarney are, as with elsewhere in County Kerry, typically from 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday. The town also enjoys daily late night shopping between May and late September, during which time many stores have the option of remaining open until 21:00 or 22:00.
