Muckross House photographFor a small town, Killarney has a decent selection of tourist attractions. Like any good southern Irish centre, it is close to the land and sea, its main draw. Killarney National Park butts right up against the town and boasts stunning lakes and lofty scenery.

Muckross House and Garden, within the park, is another major attraction and comes complete with amazing grounds and farm tours. In town is the fun weekly Killarney Market and the lofty St. Mary's Cathedral, as well as the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Muckross House is a fine Victorian mansion set within Killarney National Park and is one of the most impressive pads in the entire country. It is beautifully furnished with period items and the grounds are manicured and perfect for a stroll - be sure to see the water and rock gardens. Muckross House also shows artisans churning out traditional crafts. Whilst the visitor centre is free, there is a charge to enter the house and farm.

Although more of a day trip, Kennedy's Animal, Bird and Pet Farm is a popular attraction in Killarney, located just a short distance to the east of town on the N22 and featuring a range of animals on pretty grounds. The site covers over 75 acres / 30 hectares and also comes with interesting horse-drawn machinery. Children will enjoy the playground attractions and feeding the friendly animals, which include deer, donkeys, ducks, lambs, pot-bellied pigs and rabbits, amongst other animals. Of note, self-catering holiday homes are available here.

A must-see when wandering the streets of Killarney on a Friday is the Country Market. Located right in the heart of town, the market has become well-known for its homemade bread, cakes, tarts and other tasty treats. If you are looking for gifts and holiday souvenirs to take home, you can also get knickknacks here at knockdown prices.

This lofty, limestone cathedral is a stunning Killarney sight, built in the Gothic Revival style in the 1840s, although it was over a decade in the making owing to the famine. The most impressive part of this Roman Catholic church is its nave with vaulted ceiling, while the high spire was added in the early 1900s and at just under 87 metres / 285 feet in height, clearly punctuates the town's skyline. Further notable attractions include the original stained-glass windows, which fully remain intact and on a sunny day are truly beautiful, flooding St. Mary's Cathedral with a rainbow of coloured light.

Dating as far back as the 1930s, the Fitzgerald Stadium serves as the region's main Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium and also as the home ground of the Kerry senior football team. Enjoying a scenic backdrop provided by the Kerry Mountains and recently redeveloped at the cost of some €5 million, the Fitzgerald Stadium now boasts an overall capacity approaching some 50,000 spectators. As well as staging major football matches, the stadium also plays host to a number of additional attractions and events, such as summer pop / rock concerts, with past performers including the likes of Status Quo, Pink, the Pussycat Dolls and Westlife.
