Getting Around, Corfu Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece)

Aerial island viewA large number of holiday makers who fly into Corfu Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport choose to hire a car when they arrive, and this form of transport is especially popular with young families. Rental cars allow you to travel all over Corfu with relative ease, and since this is a very large island, the road network between the main resorts is excellent.

Bus transport is also very popular with tourists and buses travel around Corfu Town itself, and further afield, to most areas of the island. Ferry and hydrofoil services are also available, should you wish to travel around the coastline or visit another island for the day, or longer.

Car Rental

Car and motorcycle hire companies are in good supply within Corfu Town and this mode of transport offers by far the greatest freedom, allowing you to travel between the beaches and resorts of your choice. Prices are usually quite reasonable and charge either per day or per week, with the rate being reduced for long-term rentals. Within Corfu Town, the majority of the locally operated rental outlets are grouped along the waterfront, while for international hire companies, Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport tends to be the best place to find these. As you travel around Corfu, the island's two motorways (GR-24 to Palaiokastritsa and GR-25 to Lefkimi) are a good point of reference and may well allow you to reach your destination a little quicker than you expected.

Buses and Coaches

Long-distance bus transport on the island is operated by 'KTEL'.

Often referred to locally as the 'green buses', visitors will find that the KTEL buses are on of the easiest and cheapest ways to travel around the island, with buses departing from Corfu Town's bus station on the Theotoki, and travelling all over the island, to destinations and resorts such as:

Local buses are known as Corfu's 'blue buses' and tend to travel short distances. Tickets for these buses can be purchased from the ticket booth on the Plateia San Rocco, although some tickets may be purchased on the buses themselves, including those headed for Ahillion, Benitses and Kouramades.

Boats and Ferries

During the summer season, ferry and hydrofoil transportation seems to be coming and going all the time. The most popular routes from Corfu include Igoumenitsa, Lefkimmi, Paxos (Paxi), Patra and the Albanian city of Saranda, with daily sailings being regularly available. High-speed ferries named 'Flying Dolphins' are particularly speed and therefore very popular. Also worth notice, since Corfu is located on the Patra to Igoumenitsa routes, ferries even travel to the island from as far afield as Bari and Venice, in Italy.
