The Corfu International Airport Ioannis Kapodistrias is a little airport located to the south of the island's capital, Corfu Town. It is a busy facility, handling in the region of 1.7 million flyers a year, and receives both scheduled and chartered flights, mainly between May and October.

The airport hails from the 1930s, having come into commercial operation as a faster alternative to ferries in the 1960s. It lies on the east coast of the island, very close to Corfu Town, and can get extremely busy during the months of July and August, when swathes of tourists head for the beach resorts in the south.

The airport is served by several well-known airlines, including local carriers Aegean and Olympic, along with the likes of Thomson Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, Air Berlin and German Wings. Flights arrive from all over Europe, but mostly from Britain, Germany and northern Europe. Views on landing are fantastic, taking in the Kanoni hills and near-shore islands.

The airport is situated south of Corfu Town, which is the capital of this holiday island and just 3 km / 2 miles away. Corfu Town is also known as Kerkyra. Potamos is nearby, while the main beach resorts are in the south and west. Cars

Corfu Town is just a few minutes' drive to the north of the airport. The roads on the island can be narrow and poorly surfaced, meaning relatively long transfer times to the southern and northern beach resorts from the airport. Lefkimmi and Kavos (south) are both an hour away by car, while Agios Gordios (west) is closer.

Buses

Airport bus number 19 serves Corfu Town. Although the trip time is just ten minutes, this service tends to operate fairly infrequently. Public buses run from just outside the grounds, with number 6 heading into Benitses. Those passengers on package tours typically have transfers included with their holiday.

Taxis

Taxis from the Corfu International Airport Ioannis Kapodistrias are much quicker and more convenient than buses. Fares aren't fixed, so you should always agree on the price beforehand. You will find taxis gathered outside of Arrivals.
