A horrendous storm in February 1945 left the buildings decimated and some eight years later, the reconstruction of the market square was undertaken by the Swiss government. This process extended the boundaries of the Altmarkt square, taking in some new buildings, including the famous Kreuzkirche. The acclaimed market square is now used for festivals and major city events.
