Innumerable paintings created by famous artists from the past 200 years are displayed within the Dresden Albertinum and Old Masters Gemaldegalerie Art Museum, two galleries that particularly stand out from the crowd. The magnificent Albertinum building is without doubt the highlight of the Dresden arts scene, being home to four impressive museums, each featuring exhibits relating to a different theme.

Albertinum

Dresden's Albertinum is home to a museum with a total of four themed sections. The Gemäldegalerie Neuer Meister is where you will find 19th and 20th century art works, with examples by artists such as Degas, Dix, Manet, Monet, Richter and Van Gogh. The Grünes Gewölbe meanwhile boasts Europe's largest collection of royal treasures, the Skulpturensammlung is home to a large collection of sculptures, and the Münzkabinett features some 300,000 artefacts, amongst which are coins, medals, banknotes and historical bonds.

Old Masters Gemaldegalerie Art Museum (Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister)

Perhaps the city's most reputable art facility, the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister is home to an impressive collection of art works from a variety of eras and genres, and of differing media and styles. Amongst some of the more notable pieces on display are works by Raphael, Correggio and Vermeer, with these old masters being responsible for giving the facility its name.

Museum of Saxon Folk Art

Housing a large and rather diverse collection of local historic artefacts, the Museum of Saxon Folk Art also features painted ceramics, traditional art works, and information about various artistic techniques from days gone by. The recent addition of a Puppet Theatre Museum (Puppentheatersammlung) is especially appealing for the younger visitors.

Museum of Ethnology (Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde)

Home to an enormous collection of local artefacts and treasures, the Museum of Ethnology houses almost 100,000 items of various descriptions. Themed exhibits include a large group of ethnic art works, various historic treasures from around the world, together with a number of visiting exhibitions each year.
