Attractions close to Bonn range from walking trails around the nearby Siegtal Valley and alongside the meandering Ahr River, to roller coasters and fast rides at the Phantasialand amusement park within the city of Bruhl.

Many further cultural attractions lie within the neighbouring cities of Cologne and Aachen, both of which are also known for their extensive selection of restaurants and shopping opportunities. Cologne

A truly cosmopolitan city and top tourist destination, Cologne is the region's biggest city and lies approximately 25 km / 16 miles north-east of Bonn. Due to its close proximity, the two cities are closely related and Cologne makes the perfect day trip. Sightseeing is abundant around Cologne, with historic architecture playing an important part of the city's make-up. When visiting Cologne, also expect to encounter its many museums, massive department stores, trendy boutiques and world-class theatres.

Aachen

Just over one hours' drive away, the city of Aachen is situated around 90 km / 56 miles to the west of Bonn. Aachen is an appealing spot to visit and stands on the far western side of Germany, bordering both Belgium and Holland. Attractions within Aachen include its famous sulphurous hot springs and enticing thermal waters, and also its simply breathtaking Dom cathedral, which is located on Münsterplatz and is amongst the oldest in the whole of northern Europe, dating back to the late 8th century.

Siebengebirge

Located on the southern side of Bonn and to the right of the scenic Rhine River, you will find the hilly Siebengebirge area, which literally translates as 'Seven Mountains'. This low mountain range boasts in excess of 200 km / 125 miles of hiking trails, spectacular views from many vantage points, carriage rides, a 120-year-old cogwheel train, and the remains of the Schloss Drachenfels castle. Siebengebirge has become Germany's most historic nature reserve and many of the best attractions are to be found around the Drachenfels mountain, which is the most visited and just over 320 metres / 1,050 feet in height.

Rheinbach

A small town located around 27 km / 17 miles south-west of Bonn city centre, Rheinbach has a population of just less than 30,000 and is part of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis region. Known for its glass craft for more than 40 years, many of the attractions within the town of Rheinbach reflect this and include a notable glassworks museum and also a popular glass-working school

Bruhl

The city of Bruhl has become a major tourist destination, in no small part due to being home to the popular amusement park of Phantasialand. Full of family attractions, fast rides, a mystery castle, a runaway train and other thrilling roller coasters, an on-site hotel, restaurants and individually themed areas, visitors to Bruhl will also find the recently opened Max-Ernst-Museum, which is full of stylish paintings and sculptures.
