Stuttgart Airport (STR) Information

(Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany)

Aerial picture of Stuttgart, Baden-WurttembergStuttgart Airport serves this important southern German city and the Bundesland Baden-Württemberg region in general. The four-terminal facility has just one runway but is super-efficient, handling more than nine million passengers per year. Many flights arrive here from the UK and there are plentiful connections with other German destinations.

The airport hails from the WWII era, when it replaced the small Böblingen Airport and was eventually taken over by the US Air Force. It is highly modern today, with excellent facilities and a connection to the S-Bahn rail network. The nearby Stuttgart Trade Fair has made this airport particularly popular with business travellers.

Budget airline Germanwings is one of the main airlines here, along with Air Berlin, Condor and TUIfly. Lufthansa, British Airways, Flybe and Air France also serve the hub, along with United Airlines (from Newark), although intercontinental flights are limited. Expensive taxis are the only option for getting here late at night (from 01:00).

Cars

Route 27 runs direct into central Stuttgart from the airport, while the A8 also runs by, connecting with points south and west of the city. The trip into the city will take somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes. Having a car is a plus as there is a lot to see and, being Germany, the roads are in good order. The Black Forest lies to the south-west and Strasbourg in France is just beyond, while Munich is located to the east.
