Also very noteworthy is the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (Art Museum), a popular gallery enjoying a central setting on the Schlosseplatz, where it is overflowing with modern-day masterpieces.

The State Gallery is housed in two buildings, the 19th-century Old Gallery featuring works from the 14th to 19th centuries, and the spectacular New Gallery, a major visitor draw in itself for its modernist design. The New Gallery holds 20th-century art, focused on modernist and contemporary paintings and sculpture. Highly acclaimed, the Staatsgalerie is central to the local arts scene and contains the most extensive and important collection of pieces in the city.

The post-modern glass cube of the Art Museum is set in the city's main square, the magnificent Schlossplatz, and holds a top-class collection of works of art, at the centre of which are contemporary works, both paintings and sculptures, by world-famous German artists. Opened in the spring of 2005, the Kunstmuseum is known for its paintings by Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix (1891 to 1969), Willi Baumeister (1889 to 1955) and Adolf Hölzel (1853 to 1934), and sculptures by controversial Swiss-German artist Dieter Roth (1930 to 1998).

Kunstgebauder (Art Building)

Set in an attractive building in the main square, the Kunstgebauder is home to the Wurttemberg Art Association.

This 4,000-strong organisation promotes retrospectives of famous artists and exhibitions of up-and-coming Germany talent.
