(Marseille, Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur, France)

View of coastal lodgingMarseille offers a wide variety of accommodation, ranging from ever-popular budget options to small, friendly establishments, and modern boutique-style hotels. Prices vary little from season to season, and because it's not a traditional tourist destination, Marseille doesn't suffer from the usual overcrowding during the summer months.

In recent years, Marseille has become increasingly popular as a destination for the weekend visitor and as a result, accommodation is plentiful. During the winter months, visitors can take advantage of the 'Bonne Weekend en Ville' scheme (November to March only, details from the city's Tourist Office), offering special two-night hotel packages for the price of one.

Where to Stay

Most of the better hotels can be found clustered around the historic Vieux Port area of Marseille. As well as offering reasonably priced and comfortable accommodation, many rooms have great views of the harbour and across to the Basilique.

Marseille also boasts several modern, boutique-style hotels. These are more expensive but do offer a central location, as well as up-to-the-minute amenities amongst contemporary surroundings. Most notable of these is the New Hôtel Vieux Port, which has recently been redesigned and boasts an impressive lobby dominated by its glass lift.

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Marseille city centre, a selection of hotels can be found by heading east along the coastal road, or Corniche. This accommodation offers delightful sea views, as well as close proximity to the many secluded bays and beaches that are dotted along the coast.

Budget hotels are plentiful in Marseille and are mainly located towards the south of the city centre, away from the Vieux Port district. These provide very basic facilities, and in the main offer clean and comfortable accommodation and are good value for money. Further away from the city centre, and reached by Marseille's local bus service, are two inexpensive hostels which offer budget dorm accommodation together with double rooms.
