Marseille Art Galleries

There is plenty to see in the way of paintings and sculptures in Marseille, with several notable art galleries available around the city. Highlights include the Musée Cantini and the Musée des Beaux-Arts art museums, where works by many famous artists are exhibited in spacious surroundings.

Another popular gallery is the MAC (Galeries Contemporaines des Musée de Marseille), which boasts an outstanding permanent collection with paintings by many acclaimed New Realists.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

This historic art museum is the oldest in the whole city and is housed in one wing of the impressive Palais Longchamps. The museum's collection is dedicated to the French, Italian and Flemish schools of painting between the 15th and 19th centuries. There are also sculptures by the Marseille-born sculptor, Puget.

Musée Cantini

Housed in a fine 17th-century mansion, this gallery is dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Exhibits include the works of Bacon, Matisse, Le Corbusier, and Giacometti.

MAC (Galeries Contemporaines des Musée de Marseille)

Located on the Corniche, Marseille's contemporary art gallery exhibits work dating from the 1960s to the present day, with a focus on the New Realists. César, Tinguely, Viallat, Buren and Boltanski are also represented in the permanent collections.
