(Southampton, Hampshire, England, UK)

Photo of a precinct in the cityThe shopping scene is Southampton has always been good, but in recent years, the city centre has been transformed with the arrival of the well-placed West Quay complex. Other popular malls in the heart of Southampton include the Bargate Centre, the East Street Shopping Centre, and the Marlands Centre, all of which are next to large car parks and easy to find.

Southampton has seriously invested in its retailers and as a result, the city has become the premier shopping destination along the southern coast of England and ranked as the seventh best city for shops in the whole of the United Kingdom. With an unrivalled selection of shops, high-street chains and huge department stores, shoppers visiting this part of the city will immediately notice the epic proportions of the shop interiors, which are often much bigger on the inside than they initially appear.

Opening Hours

With so many large and popular shops on offer, it will come as no surprise that most shops in Southampton are open Monday through Sunday. The general opening times are Monday to Saturday - 10:00 to 18:00, and on Sundays from 11:00 to 17:00. Supermarkets around the city often stay open later.

Shopping Centres

The Bar area of the city is the traditional centre for shopping and features the best selection of high-street favourites. Nearby, the Marlands Mall also boasts more than its fair share of unusual specialist shops, while nearby Bargate Centre is aimed at the younger crowd and features plenty of leisure-related merchandise and consumables.

East Street contains a particularly good selection of shops and this part of Southampton has a charm and character all of its own, with many local stores and eateries. If you take just a short walk along the High Street, you will quickly reach Dolphin Lane, where stylish fashion boutiques are particularly plentiful and worth discovering. Just a short distance away and on the northern side of the city centre, Bedford Place features a number of prominent and well-established shops.

The true highlight of Southampton is without doubt the award-winning West Quay mall, which is home to around 100 different shops. This huge selection includes many top brands and retailers, such as Marks and Spencer, Next, The Gap and John Lewis, all housed side-by-side in a spacious and light indoor complex. A food court is located on the top floor and offers impressive views from tall floor-to-ceiling windows.
