Nearby, the Bargate Monument Gallery is especially noteworthy and worth visiting for the historic building alone, while the University of Southampton's Highfield Campus is known for being home to the prestigious John Hansard Gallery, which is just a short distance from the heart of the city.

This relatively new addition to the city's art scene is housed within the historic Bargate monument, which dates back to the 13th century. Managed by the 'A Space' association, the Bargate Monument Gallery officially opened its doors at the end of 2002. The facility promotes the works of local emerging artists, nurturing these talents and helping to give them the exposure necessary. There are many temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Open hours: Wednesday to Friday - 11:00 to 18:00, Saturday and Sunday - 12:00 to 17:00, private viewings can be arranged

The city's premier art space is home to almost 4,000 different works, from the 15th century onwards. The award-winning Southampton City Art Gallery is not to be missed and is the perfect attraction for art lovers and general tourists alike. Free of charge to visitors and highly regarded in this part of England, the gallery also features a gift shop stocking a range of cards, crafts, and stationery. Each year, approximately 90,000 people visit, which is a good indication of its popularity and standing.

The John Hansard Gallery

The John Hansard Gallery is part of the University of Southampton and dates back to 1980. Hosting many exhibitions, seminars, workshops and also a number of talks, the gallery is located at the university's Highfield Campus and has become known for its modern visual art works, attracting many international artists. Big plans are currently afoot at the gallery, with an impressive expansion planned over the next few years.

The Millais Gallery

Situated at the city's Solent University campus, the Millais Gallery concentrates on the works of up-and-coming artists. With various mediums on display, the exhibition space enjoys a central position and dates back to the mid-1990s. Highlights include many temporary exhibitions throughout the year, including work by both students and local artists.

Beatrice Royal Gallery

One of the most important contemporary galleries in the region, the Beatrice Royal Gallery is located in the nearby town of Eastleigh, just minutes north of central Southampton. With 18 different spaces displaying a huge range of exhibits, expect to see paintings, sculptures, glass works, prints and a number of colourful ceramic pieces, most of which are for sale.
