Attractions Nearby Zagreb, Day Trips and Excursions

(Zagreb, Croatia)

There is much to see within a short drive or tram ride of Zagreb. Medieval towns surround the capital left, right and centre and include the likes of Karlovac, Samobor and Vrbovec. These attractions make perfect day trips and can be reached by public transport or hire car.

Nearby is the fun Jarun Lake area, which has the best recreational attractions close to town, with its water, paths and small beaches suiting excursions. Much further afield is the Dalmatian Coast, home to stunning beaches, small islands and amazing tourist destinations such as Split - the second-biggest city in Croatia.

Jarun Lake

Jarun Lake is the main recreational area of Zagreb and is located off to the south-west of the city. This appealing attraction is a large, long, man-made lake that is primarily used for windsurfing, swimming, canoeing and rowing events, and is also surrounded by a pathway used by a combination of cyclists, walkers and bladers. The odd shingle beach can be enjoyed down at the water's edge, as well as a number of fun pedalo boats, while there are cafés and bars, too. Jarun Lake is well connected to the city by regular trams.
Open hours: daily

Karlovac

Karlovac is off to the south-west of Zagreb, being approximately 55 km / 34 miles away, and is a cute little town based around four rivers - the Dobra, the Korana, the Kupa and the Mreznica. This town is especially interesting for those into history and architecture, having been designed to represent a six-pointed star in the centre. Karlovac comes with a fortress and some fine museums, as well as the 17th-century Church of the Holy Trinity and the Franciscan Monastery. The Dubovac Hill is worth a visit and features some exceptional views. This is an easy drive, and buses and trains also run here.

Samobor

This picturesque medieval town, some 25 km / 16 miles to the west of Zagreb, is beautifully preserved and the perfect day trip option from the capital. Much of the architecture is Baroque in style, with Samobor itself famed for its tasty 'kremsnite cakes' (cream pies). The Town Museum (Gradski Muzej) is an appealing attraction suiting those interested in seeing regional cultural exhibits. Held on the eve of Lent, the Samobor Carnival (Fasnik) is amongst the town's biggest and most exciting events. Buses and trains run to Samobor from the city.

Vrbovec

Vrbovec is a short 45-km / 28-mile drive to the east of Zagreb and features a peaceful setting amid pretty country. This is also the birthplace of famous Croatian Ban (ruler) Petar Zrinski (1621 to 1671), and is perhaps best known for its traditional lifestyle and cooking festival. If you are in Vrbovec for a spot of sightseeing, then look out for the Castle of Lovrecina Grad, the Castle of Patacic, the Church of St. Vitus and the Tower of Petar Zrinski. It is also worth noting that there is good walking terrain nearby

Dalmatia Coast

The beautiful Dalmatian coastline is not all that far from the city and you can be there in just a few hours. The northern part of Dalmatia is one of coves and small beaches, and is where the town of Zadar resides. Farther to the south is Central Dalmatia, home to bigger islands and the fascinating city of Split. An excursion to Split is worth organising if you have the time, since the Roman remains and related attractions of the ancient Diocletian's Palace are quite special and really rather unexpected.

Stubicke Toplice

The village of Stubicke Toplice is a great place to relax away from city life, with its hot-spring spa water and series of outdoor pools. These naturally heated waters are believed to hold medical properties and are used to treat a variety of conditions. After lazing around in the pool, consider having a relaxing massage and some therapy treatments. If you are particularly impressed with the spa offerings of Stubicke Toplice, then the accommodation provided by the Hotel Matija Gubec comes highly recommended.
