Wellington Vineyards, Wineries and Breweries

Wellington contains a number of impressive vineyards, wineries and breweries in the Wairarapa region, including Martinborough Valley, on the outskirts of the city. Just one hours' drive from the city centre, the vast vineyards around Wairarapa welcome visitors and produce some of the finest wines on the North Island of New Zealand.

Many of the Wairarapa and Martinborough Valley vineyards are home to a variety of different leading wines, a number of which have won prestigious Air New Zealand wine awards.




Some of the most highly regarded wines produced at nearby Martinborough Valley include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and a host of sparkling wines. Many are extremely historic and these vineyards regularly export their delicious wines to different countries. Wine tasting at Martinborough Valle has become extremely popular and some of the wineries now provide courses full of information about tasting and appreciation.

Wairarapa vineyards, wineries and breweries can usually be found in particularly picturesque spots, overlooking attractive countryside, rivers and rolling hills. The Martinborough Valley vineyards vary in size and are a popular excursion from Wellington. Numerous guided wine-themed tours regularly depart from central Wellington, offering one of the best ways to reach the most popular.

Many are home to excellent facilities, including cafés, restaurants, picnic spots and tasting events, and some even provide basic lodging.
