Wellington is home to one of the premier shopping areas on New Zealand's North Island. The main downtown district is known as the 'Golden Mile' and contains numerous arcades, malls, department stores and interesting speciality shops. The 'Golden Mile' region incorporates Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Victoria Street and Manners Street.

The main shopping centre in Wellington is Harbour City, situated on Lambton Quay. Containing many major retail areas, including the Capital on the Quay mall and the Old Bank Arcade, there are always a host of bargains for eager shoppers in the city. Nearby Cuba Street is also an important local retail hotspot, where you will find numerous gift and souvenir shops, fashion boutiques, antiques stores and trendy street cafés.


Shopping in Wellington has long been a major highlight for visitors to this area of New Zealand. With such a diverse range of retail centres, malls and well-designed pedestrianised districts, Wellington has an enormous variety of shops, regularly attracting thousands of visitors from around this area of New Zealand's North Island. Opening Hours

Most shops in Wellington are open from 09:30 to 18:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, usually remaining open until around 21:00 on both Thursday and Friday. Sunday trading is extremely popular and now most shops in the city are open until around 16:00 to 17:00 every Sunday.
