Yogyakarta Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia)

The climate of Java and Indonesia as a whole is generally described as being tropical, with Yogyakarta enjoying high temperatures and two main seasons. Between May and September, the weather in Yogyakarta is at its sunniest and driest, and this season has become known as the 'dry season'.

For the rest of the year, from October to April, the climate in Yogyakarta is noticeably different as the monsoon arrives, earning this period the name of the 'wet season' and seeing monthly precipitation levels peaking at more than 600 mm / 24 inches. December, January, February and March tend to be the wettest months, with dramatic tropical storms. However, amongst the rainy showers and downpours, sunshine is far from being a stranger at this time of the year.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Understandably, most tourists choose to holiday in Yogyakarta during the dry season, when the likelihood of any wet weather is quite remote. Daytime temperatures average between 31°C / 88°F and 32°C / 90°F, although in the height of the day do tend to feel a little hotter, since the climate can be quite humid.

If you decide to visit Yogyakarta outside of the dry season, then it is essential to pack accordingly and plan your sightseeing around the various forecasts, allowing you to make the most of any dry days. Travelling during the wet season is not usually problematic, although the roads can become rather muddy.
