If you are visiting Yogyakarta in either January, April and early November, you will be able to join in the raucous festivities during the three yearly Gerebeg festivals. These events really are amongst the most colourful and well supported of all the grand processions on the island of Java, and draw enormous crowds.

Those attending one of Yogyakarta's Gerebeg festivals can expect to see lots of traditional costumes and court dress, palace guards, and some truly outstanding floats, which are adorned with huge mountains of rice. These Gerebeg processions head to the mosque, which is located on the westerly side of the kraton, accompanied by traditional gamelan music.
