Yogyakarta Hotels and Accommodation

(Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia)

Spread around Yogyakarta are plenty of lodging options, ranging from 'losmen' (homestay-type accommodation) to a real glut of luxury chain hotels. However, typical of many Indonesian cities, few hotels in Yogyakarta are what you would call expensive, even during the peak dry season (July and August), away from the predictable monsoon weather.

December is another very busy time in Yogyakarta, when hotels are in demand and reservations a good idea. Outside of these periods, accommodation is usually easy to come by, with discounts being quite commonplace at times.

Where to Stay

The majority of the cheap hotels in Yogyakarta are grouped within the Sosrowijayan area, being located around the Jalan Malioboro and directly to the south of the railway line. The alleyways of Gang Sosrowijayan I and II, between the Jalan Sosrowijayan and the Jalan Pasar Kembang, are brimming with budget accommodation.

Nearby, the Prawirotaman area of Yogyakarta was formerly the place to come for mid-range accommodation, although in recent years, the lodging rates have fallen somewhat, but in most cases, standards are still quite reasonable.

If you favour familiar chains and brand hotels, then consider staying at the centrally located Novotel Yogyakarta on the Jalan Jend Sudirman, at the Hotel Ibis Malioboro on the Jalan Malioboro, or at the colonial-style Grand Mercure on the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. For luxury accommodation in Yogyakarta, both the Sheraton Mustika and the Hyatt Regency come highly recommended, the latter of which stands on the northerly outskirts and boasts views across a very scenic golf course.
