Re. Mysterious and masterfully restored
When did you visit? At the weekend or on a Hindu holiday? Try and check a calendar next time and you might avoid the crowds. Could have just been generally busy though!

Mysterious and masterfully restored
I've been ticking off World Heritage Sites from my long list of them ever since retiring in 2005 and leaving Ireland to travel around the world. Prambanan Hindu temples lived up to their billing and wonderfully tell the ancient Ramayana tale but it was far too packed for my liking.

Re. One for serious walkers
I suggest that walkers that aren't too serious do the Kalurang trail. Others though that are well up for an adventure can actually climb up Merapi and then look down into it by following the Selo trail. Reading up before embarking on such a jaunt is advised though!

One for serious walkers
I was fascinated by Mount Merapi as soon as I started reading about how it is among the most active volcanoes in this particular corner of Asia. All I will say without spoiling it is that you should make sure you are cut out for the hike as the conditions can be rather challenging. Magnificent views however high up you get though.

Yogyakartan art and culture
The history museum in Yogyakarta was one of the main highlights of my time there and I particularly enjoyed learning more about the Sultan and his palace. There was a theatre performance and also the chance to watch some ballet every evening.
