The climate of Aswan is characteristically Egyptian and at times, very hot and very dry - rain is almost unheard of (some nearby Nubian settlements don't even bother with roofs on their houses!) However, the heat tends to be a dry heat and not overly humid, which makes even the hottest and sunniest Aswan weather all the more bearable.

When you come to Egypt, you will find very little need to bring an umbrellas, that is unless you intent to be using it to shade you from the sun. Aswan is no exception to this, with an average of seven or eight hours of sunny weather even in the winter months, rising to around 12 hours of sunshine in the height of the summer.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The summer climate in Aswan features temperatures which regularly top 40°C / 104°F, when many attractions and shops tend close for a few hours in the early afternoon, and then stay open until late into the evening, when it quickly becomes much cooler. Summer solstice is a major event here and these celebrations play an important part in the city's history. If you holiday in Aswan during the summer, treat the weather sensibly, drink plenty of bottled water, use sunscreen and wear loose, cotton clothing.

Many tourists prefer to visit Aswan between October to May, when the climate is at its most favourable and the temperatures average anywhere between 23°C / 73°F and 35°C / 95°F. However, occasional dust storms occur between March and May, known as 'khamsin' winds.
